You want to run promotions using Receipt Validation

You need clear guidelines and recommendations for running successful promotions using receipt validation as proof of purchase.

This article addresses registration, consumer authentication, award rules, limits, and fraud prevention.

Registration & Consumer Authentication

  1. Multi-Channel Registration - It's best practice to require consumers to register using both phone and email.
  2. Phone Verification - Send an SMS with a One-Time Password (OTP) that users must enter to verify their phone number.
  3. Unique Association -  Ensure each phone number and email is tied to a single account. Implement checks to prevent users from creating multiple accounts with the same email or phone.
  4. Prevent Email Manipulation - Some email providers, like Google Gmail, allow users to create variations of their email addresses that direct to the same inbox. Implement email normalization to block variations of the same address, such as:
    1. Variations using Dots - john.doe@gmail.com, johndoe@gmail.com, and john.d.oe@gmail.com all point to the same email address.
    2. Variations using Plus - johndoe+promo1@gmail.com and johndoe+promo2@gmail.com are also delivered to johndoe@gmail.com.
  5. Limit Registrations per Device - Restrict the number of accounts that can be registered from the same device or IP address.
  6. Geofence Promotions - Restrict promotion access at least at the country level.
  7. Rapid Registration - Detect rapid receipt submissions that may indicate bot activity.
  8. Collect Essential Information & Marketing  Consent -  Ensure essential consumer data and marketing consent are collected during the registration process for compliance and communication purposes.

Important: Without those mechanisms, a single user could register multiple accounts using email variations, undermining the promotion's integrity.

Award Logic,  Limits & Fraud Prevention

  1. Simple Rewarding Rule -  Some retailers may only print brand names without detailed product information. For broad retailer campaigns, base rewards on the total amount spent on participating products to avoid incorrect rewards.
  2. Mandatory Receipt Details -  To optimize fraud prevention and detect duplicates, receipts must include the following information:
    1. Retailer name
    2. Purchase date
    3. Total amount spent
    4. At least one participating product
  3. Reward Logic
    1. Receipts must be dated within the promotion period. For longer promotions, Ourcart recommends not accepting receipts older than 30 days.
    2.  Ensure the receipt meets all the necessary criteria to qualify for the promotion.
  4. Purchase Limits - Add purchase limites to mitigate fraud activity and enhance the integrity of the offer.
    1. Per Consumer -  Limit the number of receipts a consumer can submit (e.g., 1 receipt per day).
    2. Per Receipt - Limit the rewards or points that can be earned from a single receipt.
    3. Per Promotion - Limit the rewards or points that can be earned in a specific promotion.
  5. Set up alerts - Suspicious activity can happen and the reccomendation is to have alarms/alerts in place so you can prevent those awards to be paid. Examples are:
    1. Receipts with unusually high quantities of the same item.
    2. Receipts with high prices for participating products.
    3. Receipts with excessively high total purchase amounts.
    4. Multiple accounts submitting the same receipt.

Important: Consider rejecting flagged receipts and blocking accounts that regularly submit duplicate receipts.

Participation Guidelines

  1. Clearly outline how participants can join the promotion. Specify the promotion period, including the start and end dates, along with any other important terms and conditions related to the promotion.
  2. Create a detailed FAQ section that addresses key areas such as:
    1. Account Creation
    2. Promotion Duration and Limitations
    3. Receipt Submission Guidelines
    4. Reward Fulfillment
    5. Privacy and Data Protection
